The 4 pp. pamphlet accompanying the photographs is titled 'Types of national physiognomies in carton-pierre,' and takes the form of a letter from Baer, translated into English, that had originally appeared in the German language edition of the 'St Petersburgh Times,' issue no. 132. In this communication Baer draws attention to the five tablets on display at the St Peterburg Exhibition of Native Industry: 'These tablets display in Carton-pierre [a form of papier-mache made to imitate metal] plastic representations of the various national types of man. They are the work of Mr. Heuser, a clever artist, whose excellent figures of animals would be familiar to the readers of this paper did native effort receive the same attention as foreign.' Baer recounts that Heusler had shown him some examples of his work, 'stating his desire to make a large number, provided good originals could be obtained. Having for a considerable time, collected national portraits, I knew in what books to find the good originals required, and favored Mr. Heusler's design from a conviction that, since so much is said at the present day concerning the various human races, and their mental and physical endowments, it becomes an absolute necessity for schools which profess a higher culture, to lay a foundation of the knowledge of the divisions of man ... ' In the construction of these tablets, therefore, 'it appeared to me of greater utility to divide the types of the different nations geographically as they exist in reality, without making an arbitrary classification according to descent. In conformity with this idea, five frames were designed, corresponding to the five parts of the globe; in each frame are 16 or 18 heads with the ordinary ornaments used by the various nations of which they are types. The top line in every frame is set apart for Northern, the bottom line for Southern nations. Advance, in every line, from left to right corresponds to motion West to East. In this manner the individual nations are generally classified according to the position of our geographical maps
