Half-leather and maroon buckram oblong folio volume measuring 360 x 555 mm and containing 56 plates and four maps. Of the plates, 9 are original photographic prints, the remaining 47 being tinted or coloured lithographs. In many copies of the work, which was issued in monthly parts, lithographic copies of the original photographs were also later supplied to subscribers, when it was seen that the photographs were fading badly soon after publication. The general quality of the photographs is not high and many appear to have been considerably retouched in the negative.
