A pair of hanging scrolls with a central inscription in Manchu, inscribed by Lejing Chen Xie (樂净程燮). Light brown paper with red seal-stamps, affixed to a paper scroll with a cylindrical roller. The Manchu script is in bold thick lettering in one line down the centre, with smaller Chinese characters on both sides.
The Manchu, which Simon and Nelson (1977) translate as, "Do not idly discuss the faults of others; [rather] sit quietly and consider your own again and again", reads:
Scroll A (Or 13556 A): Line 1 of couplet:
Sula gisun leolececi weri waka be ume bodoro (ᠰᡠᠯᠠ ᡤᡞᠰᡠᠨ ᠯᡝᠥᠯᡝᠴᡝᠴᡞ ᠸᡝᠷᡞ ᠸᠠᡣᠠ ᠪᡝ ᡠᠮᡝ ᠪᠣᡩᠣᠷᠣ)
Scroll B (Or 13556 B): Line 2 of couplet:
Cib seme tefi beyei endebuku be cibtui gūni (ᠴᡞᠪ ᠰᡝᠮᡝ ᡨᡝᠸᡞ ᠪᡝᡪᡝᡞ ᡝᠨᡩᡝᠪᡠᡣᡠ ᠪᡝ ᠴᡞᠪᡨᡠᡞ ᡤᡡᠨᡞ)
Both scrolls are labelled with white stickers reading "23.A.b". Written on the outside of each scroll in brown ink: "12 July 1873. South Manchoo." The scrolls are also numbered in the same ink: "(28)" for scroll A and "(27)" for scroll B. These two scrolls are boxed together with two other scrolls (OR 13555 A and B) of similar size and date of purchase.
