Origin:
The Cistercian abbey of St Mary and St Michael, Combermere, Chesire. Title, ‘Codex iste inceptus erat per me Johannem Massy suppriorem Anno domini millesimo quingentesimo vicesimo quarto’ [1524] (f. 1r). John Massy (d. 1564) was the final abbot of Combermere. In another hand, ‘Ab anno 8 R. 2 usque 21 H. 8’ (f. 1r), i.e. the 8th year of Richard II to the 21st year of Henry VIII, 1384/85–1529/30. ‘Liber abbatis de cumbermere’ (back cover).
Provenance:
Sir George Cotton (d. 1545), comptroller to the household of the Duke of Richmond: the abbey buildings were acquired by him after the Dissolution and remained in the family. Pressmark, no. 15 (probably 17th-century, back cover). The contents of the abbey were sold by Francis Lynch Wellington Stapleton-Cotton, fourth Viscount Combermere (b. 1887, d. 1969), including the library, at an auction at the abbey in 1919.
‘J.F.E.’: pencilled initials likely from the 20th century (front cover); the manuscript is untraced beween 1919 and 2015.
Samuel Gedge, booksellers: purchased the book from a dealer who had bought it from a west London house clearance.
Purchased by the British Library, 1 February 2016.
