Spanish chronicle, including the Estoria de España and covering the period from Fruela II to Fernando IV (c. 910 to 1312):
f. 1 is a paste-down to the inside upper binding containing an image;
ff. 2r, 2v: Two separate leaves: f. 2r is blank, f. 2v contains an offset or partial mirror image of an account of the genealogy of Fernan Arias Mesia de Luna that is on the recto of a damaged separate leaf; on the verso is an image and modern pencil foliation, '2v';
ff. 3r-65v: The opening chapters of the Estoria de España, added in a later hand to replace missing text from the original manuscript, incipit 'Aqui comienca la tercera parte de la corónica general de España';
ff. 66r–208v: The surviving original section of the Estoria de España; the account of the later exploits of El Cid and the reign of Alfonso VI is from the same branch as the lost 'Crónica abreviada' or 'Crónica Manuelina' of Juan Manuel;
ff. 209r-238r: Material added in a later hand at the end of the original text extending the chronicle to the end of the reign of Ferdinand III (1252);
ff. 240r-393v: A further continuation of the chronicle up to 1312 in a hand of the late 15th or early 16th century, with accounts of the reigns of Alfonso X, Sancho IV and Fernando IV, concluding with a portrait of Alfonso XI.
Decoration:
12 large coloured drawings (ff. 2v, 27r, 31r, 63r, 137r, 149r, 189r, 239r, 301r, 325r, 326r, 393r). 3 large coloured drawings in a different style pasted inside upper and lower covers (ff. 1r, 394r). Initials in red, some with purple penwork decoration. Rubrics and chapter numbers in red. Quire signatures.
The subjects of the images are, according to the rubrics:
f. 2v: Two unidentified men in robes, seated, one with a hat and holding a staff, the other partially damaged;
f. 27r: Don Sancho and Doña Elvira (above); Don Garcia of Navarre, Don Ramiro and Don Fernando of Castille (below);
f. 31r: Don Fernando the Great and Doña Sancha seated facing each other with their coat of arms between them (above); Don Alfonso of Leon, Don Sancho of Castille and Don Garcia of Portugal (below);
f. 63r: Don Alfonso of Castille and El Cid, seated opposite one another, touching swords;
f. 137r: Don Alfonso of Aragon and Doña Uraca of Castille seated beside each other holding sceptres;
f. 149r: Don Sancho of Castille, seated, holding a sceptre with a chained lion at his feet;
f. 189r: Don Enrique of Castille;
f. 239r: Don Alfonso X seated holding a sword and orb;
f. 301r: Don Sancho IV on horseback, holding a sword;
f. 325r: Doña Maria, wife of Don Sancho;
f. 326r: Don Fernando III;
f. 393r: Don Alfonso XI.

Foliation: ff. 394 (f. 1 and f. 394 are paste-downs to the inside upper and lower bindings and ff. 2r and 2v are two separate leaves + one paper flyleaf after f. 1, one laminated page after f. 2 with five fragments of text pasted to it, and one paper flyleaf after f. 393).
Script: Humanistic and Humanistic cursive.
Binding: Post-1600. Blind-tooled brown leather over wooden boards; remains of clasps.

Provenance:
Fernan Arias Mesia de Luna, his genealogy on f. 2v, added in the same hand as some marginal notations.
Bought by the British Museum, using the Bridgewater fund (£12,000 bequeathed in 1829 by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (b. 1756, d. 1829).
