A set of 200 cards for the Japanese poetry game (utaawase), consisting of 100 “yomifuda” or “reading cards” each with a hand-coloured picture of one of the 100 poets and the first part of one of his/her poems and 100 “torifuda” or “grabbing cards” with the corresponding second part of the poem. The cards are enclosed in two wrap-around cases housed in a black lacquer box bearing a paulownia crest.
Undated but possibly owned by Toyama Mitsutō (Kōnin) 外山光任 (1716-1769) whose name is written on the inside of one of the cases.

Materials: Ink and colour on thick paper. Edges and reverse of cards are embellished with gold paint. Each set of 100 cards is enclosed in a wrap-around chitsu case covered on the outside with red brocade with a pattern of auspicious symbols. The insides of the chitsu cases are covered in gold paper.
