A collection of miscellaneous letters and papers.
Comprises:
1. Letter from Sir Palmer Fairborne to the Commissioners for the affairs of Tangier. Giving account of the enemy’s proceedings, and requesting additional hoops. Dated Tangier, 13 April 1680 (original) (folio 1)
2. Articles of truce, treaty, and commerce for the term of 6 months, concluded between Col. Edward Sackvile, Commander in chief of Tangier, and the King of Morocco, Muley Ismael [Moulay Ismail Ibn Sharif]. Dated 25 November 1680 (folio 3)
3. Accompte of moneys paid towards the ransom of the Seamen which were taken captives in the ship Ruth, of Dartmouth, of which George Miller Senior was Master, and Redeemed out of their slavery at Sallee [Salé], Morocco, by Herbert Aylwin. Dated 9 February 1679/1680 (folio 8)
4. Letter from Edward Coleman to the Revd. M. Le Chese [Françoise de la Chaise], Confessor to King Louis XIV, giving an account of the proceedings between the said Edward Coleman and Father Jean Ferrier, and the measures taken between Louis XIV and the Duke of York, James Stewart, to procure the dissolution of the English Parliament, and the introduction of Popery; and requesting aid for that purpose. Dated 29 September 1675 (folio 9). This is one of the letters for which Edward Coleman was accused of High Treason. He was found guilty 28 November 1678.
5. Copy of a consolatory letter written by John Tillotson, Archbishop of Canterbury, to a sick friend. Written a week before the Archbishop died (No date) (folio 23)
6. ‘The Bishop of Armagh’s Prophecy’, by James Ussher, Archbishop of Armagh (1625-1656) prophesying a persecution of the church.] (folio 25)
7. ‘The Truth at Last’, a ballad to the tune of ‘Which nobody can deny’ temp. Anne. Also includes ‘Come all ye brave boys, and high Churchmen draw near’. (folio 27)
