A folding album containing 50 examples of calligraphy by Japanese historical figures ranging from the 8th to late 16th centuries. Begins with Emperor Shōmu 聖武天皇 (701-756) and Empress Kōmyō 光明皇后 (701-760) and ends with Kobori (Enshū) Masakazu 小堀(遠州) 正一 (1579-1647). Many of the specimens bear the official appraisal stamp 'Kinzan 琴山'.
The album itself is undated but was probably put together in the mid-19th century.

Format: Folding album with 38 leaves. On each leaf one or two paper fragments bearing calligraphy have been pasted accompanied in almost all cases by a slip indicating the name of the calligrapher.
Dimensions: 395 x 250 mm.
Illustrations: Front endpaper is covered with gold paper and decorated with an illustration of two deer grazing near a waterfall. Back endpaper has an illustration of birds, rocks and plants. Other leaves have designs of plants and flowers over which the slips of paper bearing the calligraphy have been pasted.
Binding: Green brocade cover with a floral motif. Metal book corners engraved with a foliate design. Handwritten title slip: 御手鑑.
