Han-Chung myŏngsŭng toch'ŏp 韓中名勝圖帖
- Scope & Content:
-
Title supplied by cataloguer. 'Album of Scenic Spots in Korea and China' containing calligraphy and ten folded leaves depicting ‘real-view’ landscape paintings. Five leaves depict Chinese scenery and five show Korean landscapes. The calligraphy is an extract from Du shan hai jing 讀山海經 [On reading the 'Classic of Mountains and Seas'], a poem composed by Tao Yuanming 陶淵明 (365-427), an eminent Chinese poet during the Eastern Jin dynasty.
The five leaves of Korean landscapes depict famous scenic spots in Pyŏng'an province during the Chosŏn dynasty: Kangsŏnnu 降仙樓, Yaksandongdae 藥山東臺, T'onggunjŏng 統軍亭, Paeksangnu 百祥樓 and Ssangodo 雙鰲島. The painter is unknown but the composition and details of the paintings are similar to other albums produced by Chosŏn Dynasty court painters in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
