ff. 1r-51vTitle: Shorshe ha-shemotTitle: שרשי השמותThe text was copied from a manuscript containing more extensive compositions by the same author, the pages of the fuller treatise having been indicated by the copyist (see e.g., folio 2r, 2v).
Folios 1r-3r: Kaṿanot shemot ha-Shem in various prayers. Folios 4r-35r: expositions of kabbalistic divine names in alphabetical order; the magic efficacy connected with the use of the names is often added. Folios 35r-36v: various vocalisations of the divine names. Folio 37r: a piece on writing a mezuzah according to the teachings of Ari. Folios 38r-39r: expositions of angelic names. Folios 39v-48r contain the commentary on 70 names of Metatron (sar ha-panim) from Nehemiah ben Shelomoh of Erfurt school. Folio 49r: a piece from Shimush Torah. Folios 49v-51r: another part of the book Shimush Torah.

Vellum binding wormed, holed and may be two layers – appears to be older than textblock; perhaps an old liturgical (Christian?) manuscript.

Giuseppe Almanzi (b. 1801, d. 1860), bibliophile; his manuscript no. 281: his library including 322 medieval Hebrew manuscripts were purchased en bloc by the British Museum in October 1865 for £1,000 through Asher & Co., Berlin dealer to the British Museum (see [Paisey_1997] 131-153): inscribed, back flyleaf (i)v.
