- Title:

Portion of the original manuscript of Kenilworth by Sir Walter Scott
- Scope & Content:
-
Two folios of the autograph manuscript of Kenilworth including the end of chapter three and the beginning of chapter four of volume I. The folios, numbered 14 and 15 by Scott, originally preceded the first folio, numbered 16, in the greater part of the manuscript in Egerton MS 1661.
The text begins with Foster's meeting of Lambourne at the end of chapter three: "Hark you, Michael Lambourne," said Foster; "you are a gambler now, and live by the counting of chances. Compute me the odds that I do not, on this instant, throw you out of that window into the ditch there." It ends halfway through chapter four with the words: "By this light Anthony thou art mad answered Lambourne and hast described rather the gentleman usher to a puritan's wife than the follower of an ambitious [courtier]."
The two folios are bound with several blank pages and a title page: 'Portion of the original manuscript of Kenilworth - Sir Walter Scott'. Facing the title page is a portrait of Scott by A. Wivel, after C. Picart. The title page is followed by a mounted note: 'Part of the original ms. of Kenilworth given to me Edmond Logan by John Ballantine'.
