- Title:
- Two letters from Queen Anne, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, to Charles, future Holy Roman Emperor, 1708, and to Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor, 1710, with accompanying documents
- Scope & Content:
-
1. Letter from Queen Anne to Charles, styled King Charles III of Spain, future Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor. Windsor, 20 September 1708. 1 bifolium. French.
Anne writes on the occasion of the return of James Craggs junior as resident with Charles, to congratulate him on the arrival of the new Queen of Spain and the submission of Sardinia. She encourages Charles to gain control of Port Mahon, in order to overwinter a squadron securely there; otherwise the former practice of returning to Lisbon and emerging swiftly in spring should be no less difficult than before, in the light of reports of the condition of the French Navy at Toulon.
2. Letter from Queen Anne to Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor, brother of Charles, titular King of Spain. St James’s Palace, December 1710. 1 bifolium. Latin.
Anne writes after the defeat of the allies in Spain in December 1710, to request the Emperor to send troops from Italy and to encourage others by example.
With enclosure wrapper addressed to: ‘Serenissimo, Potentissimo, et Invictissimo principi et Domino, Domino Josepho [etc.]’. Inscribed below in another hand: 'Königin in Angelland. 26.xbre.1710'. Inscription below seal on side panels '[Königin?] of England 26.xbris.1710'.
3. Accompanying early to mid-20th century documents:
- folder with title ‘Anne, Queen of Great Britain, 1665-1714’, and description of the 1708 letter of Queen Anne to Charles, possibly for a display or for sale. Inside the folder are manuscript extracts from Bishop Burnet’s History of his own times, a clipping from an unidentified printed work (pasted in), an engraving of Queen Anne (book illustration, after Kneller) (formerly hinged in, now loose), manuscript notes on Edward Southwell (1671-1739)
- manuscript translation of the 1708 letter to Charles, headed: ‘Letter of Queen Anne to the Archduke Charles, called “Charles III” of Spain’ (1 folio)
- manuscript notes headed ‘Extracts from ‘Marlborough’ by Winston Churchill, Harrap, vol. III’ (2 folios)
- folder inscribed ‘QUEEN ANNE 1708’.
4. Accompanying folder from an earlier date. Cover inscription: ‘No. 32 / Anne Reine D’angleterre [?]’. Inscriptions on verso of cover suggest the folder was re-used as part of a larger collection: ‘1751+ / Manuel,’, numbered ‘87’.
