A presentation copy of a grant of arms from Sir Gilbert Dethick (b. c. 1510, d. 1584), Garter Principal King of Arms, to Jean Belmaine (fl. 1546–1559), French tutor to King Edward VI (r. 1547–1553) and Queen Elizabeth I (r. 1558–1603), dated 20 November 1552.
The blazon of Belmaine's Arms is as follows: 'Azure, engrailed chevron of ermine argent, between three bezants or, each with a demi-lion rampant gules, the helm with a torse of argent and gules, a griffon's head between two wings, azure with bezants or a mantle gules lined with argent'.
The charter is threaded with two parchment seal ties, but the seals are now lacking.
Decoration:
1 large historiated initial 'O'(mnibus) depicting Sir Gilbert Dethick pointing to Belmaine's Arms in the left-hand margin and the first line of the text. The upper and right-hand margins are decorated with borders filled with flowers and foliage, two gold fleur-de-lys, and a Tudor rose surmounted by a crown.
