Title:: Rāmamālā Library manuscript project
Scope & Content:: This list represents an almost 1% sample of the approximately 9000 Sanskrit and Bangla manuscripts, which highlights some endangered, rare, or unique parts of the collection. The sample includes a selection from traditional genres of Hindu literature such as grammar, mythology, astrology, poetry, medicine, rites and ceremonies, pilgrimage, worship, and prayer. While often representative of traditional genres, many of the selections represent regional examples of these or unique commentaries that are germane to Bangladesh and Bengali culture more broadly (to include West Bengal). The digitally collected manuscripts also include non-traditional works often viewed as "women's" religion such as the category of Pāñcālī, devotional works that cross boundaries between Hinduism and Islam. The collection also includes Picture Poems (Citrabandhakāvya), Sacred diagrams (yantras), and a wealth of scribal pictoral musings randomly found in a number of manuscripts and represent syles, patterns, and subjects common to the region. The date range of the original material copied is between 1700 and 1910. Specific dates are cited for individual items when available. 82 paper and 2 palm leaf manuscripts were copied. Arrangement:: The collection and its system of arrangment was slow to evolve and currently the manuscripts sit on a set of slatted wooden shelves in two main rooms, as well as a third, subsidiary room in another building, close to the student dormitories, primarily used for housing books. Between 1912 and 1926 manuscripts were arranged according to bundles brought to Ramamala Library from family homes and represented a diverse cross section of materials. Many of these bundles have been maintained and reorganized with respect to dominant works within each one. The main effort of collection and organization occurred around or just before 1926 with the hiring and introduction of the librarian Rashmohan Chakravarti. Chakravarti oversaw the organization and collection of manuscripts with the majority acquired in the 1930s and 40s. The current assistant librarian (now in his 80s), Indro Kumar Sinha has done the most recent organization and arrangement of materials. He has lived at the library (literally sleeping in one of its rooms) since the 1960s (his family lives below in a separate room). He began the work of putting the manuscripts into traditional Hindu divisions of Sanskrit works such as Itihasa (mythology), Jyotisa (astrology and mathematics), Grammar, Vedas, Medicine, and others. Some materials were rearranged by scholars from Dhaka university as well as during a project sponsored by the Ford Foundation in the 1980s, especially focusing on Tantra. These efforts to organize have been compounded with the inclusion of non-traditional material, such as vernacular materials, modern letters, legal wills, and even objects (e.g., embroidered heart from a wedding), that do not fit the traditional Sanskrit categories. The end result is that there are several different layers of organization, but no single system or consistant logic maintained throughout. The EAP team began a system of coherent numbering from the beginning to the end of the collection, but maintained its current ordering on the shelves to best preserve the work of previous generations of scholars.
