Title:: Edward Upward: Correspondence with Charles Evans, including typescripts of Upward's work
Scope & Content:: Correspondence between Upward and Charles Evans, his friend and former student, containing 41 handwritten letters from Upward to Evans and 34 from Evans to Upward, as well as some written reports of personal visits and telephone conversations. Some earlier correspondence from 1963 has not survived. This collection also includes 7 typescripts of Upward's works, as well as news clippings related to its reception, collected by Evans. This collection complements the Upward Papers at Add MS 72688-72702 and the Upward Supplementary Papers at Add MS 89002. Of particular interest are Upward's typescripts which shed light on his habit of constantly revising older works and the accompanying correspondence which is revealing in terms of his approach to this practice. The correspondence also makes frequent mention of Upward's contemporaries, especially Christopher Isherwood. The letters mostly follow Upward's later career, particularly his return to short-fiction after completing his trilogy of novels (The Spiral Ascent), and especially his attempts to find a literary style consistent with his political vision after his break with The Communist Party of Great Britain in 1948.
