The manuscript is heavily corrected by many (secure) pasted-down corrections and additions which have not been foliated. Annotated in the margins in pencil with performance timings.
- f. 1. Small loose folio. 5 bars of music in autograph score: 'Boatswain Version B'. In black ink.
- f. 2. Title-page. 'The Boatswain's Mate for broadcasting (Time 52 minutes)'. Smyth has also noted: 'This M.S. is absolutely identical with what is in the vocal score' (although there are some differences between the manuscript and the printed vocal score).
- ff. 3-12. 'Part I'.
- ff. 12-22. 'Part II'.
The vocal score was first published in Vienna (1915). First performance: Shaftesbury Theatre, London, 28 Jan 1916 (cond. Smyth). The manuscript may be of later date: the opera was broadcast by BBC Cardiff, 29 April 1926.
