Giles Swayne Collection

Scope & Content:

The majority of the collection is made up of a series of numbered work-books (MS Mus. 1808/1) and a series of autograph scores (MS Mus. 1808/2). These are accompanied by a file of select correspondence, some biographical material, and a scrapbook containing programme notes and newspaper cuttings (MS Mus. 1808/3).

The numbered work-books document the process of composition through notes, ideas, sketches and draft scores of both published and unpublished works, in varying levels of detail for each piece. Further notes, jottings, drawings and essays within each work-book also give some insight into the wider context of Swayne's work. Additional context is provided by the correspondence and scrapbook (MS Mus. 1808/3), and the inventory held in MS Mus. 1808/4.

Of the scores in Ms Mus. 1808/2, the vast majority are autograph, and consist variously of draft scores, fair copy scores and transparencies. Not every published work is represented.

The correspondence, biographical material and scrapbook in Mus Mus. 1808/3 was deposited amongst the scores in MS Mus. 1808/2, but have been separated as there was no obvious link between these items and the surrounding scores. Original order has been retained as far as possible in the remainder of the collection, but in places items of similar size, format or orientation have been grouped together in order to facilitate binding and production.
