Diary of a Bone court official
- Scope & Content:
-
Diary, 1790-1800, in Bugis language and script.
The diarist was apparently one of the highest Bone officials. There are indications that he was the ma'danreng (see also Or. 8154*); it was he who dealt with all kinds of state affairs and through whose hands all important letters passed. The notes for the years 1795-8 give much information on the struggle between Bone and Sidenreng, the attitude of the other South Sulawesi states, and Dutch efforts to maintain peace. Some notes refer to battles, the erection of strongholds, and chiefs who died in action. For the rest the diary contains notes on legal questions, especially on matrimonial law and property. Events in the royal family and the ruling classes receive great attention.
A great variety of miscellaneous notes are written on pp. of the diary originally left blank, including:
Alliances and war activities (ff. 85v., 78v., 72r.-71v., 65r., 58r.-57v., 51r·-50v., 44r.-43v., 37r.-36v., 29v., 16r.-13r.).
Correspondence with the Dutch between 1797 and 1799 on the attitude of the VOC towards the conflicts (ff. 100r., 44r.-43v., 36v., 29v., 23v., 12v-11r., 8r.).
Correspondence with the Dutch about English ships in the Bay of Bone (f. 86r.), on the English taking the loji (fortified post) at Bantaeng (f. 44r., letter to the Arumpone dated 20 Feb. 1797), and on rumours about an Anglo-Dutch peace settlement (ff. 44r.-43v., letter to the Arumpone dated 2 Aug. 1797).
List of lili' (countries belonging to the Bone federation) (ff. 11r.-10r.).
Astronomical, meteorological, and agricultural calendar (ff. 22r.-16v.).
Names of days and their auspicious or inauspicious natures (ff. 9r.-8r.).
Rules for people who pay homage to the Arumpone (ff. 7v.-5v.). Cf. Add. MS 12373.
Tolo' poem written by the Arumpone (f. 5). Poem (f. 4r.).
Formulae and sentences in Arabic, with partial Buginese translations (ff. 107v., 99v., 1v.). Drawings and specimens of Arabic calligraphy (ff. 7v., 3v.).
Further miscellaneous notes on slaves, goods, guns, gunpowder, weights and measures, etc.
