Letters and fragments in Bugis, found inside Or 8154
- Scope & Content:
-
A collection of 103 letters, fragments of letters, and scraps of paper in Buginese, Makasarese, Malay, and Arabic, ‘found inside the binding of Or. 8154’. Often the first and last characters of each line have been cut off, making it difficult to identify precisely the contents of these items. Many refer to the state of confusion in the late 18th century in South Sulaweesi. In Goa a rebel named Sangkilang had got hold of the regalia and many of the Makasarese took his side. Troubles in the Buginese states contributed to the confusion. Several of the letters, including Makasarese ones, are addressed to the Ma'danreng, which makes it almost certain that this official was the owner of Or. 8154.
The MS contains:
Buginese letters or fragments of letters: nos. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 14-35, 37, 38, 44-9, 54, 61, 64-7, 70, 71, 72-3 (belonging together), 74-6, 77-9 (belonging together), 80-1 (belonging together), 82, 83, 85-92, 94, 96-8, 101, 102.
Buginese notes or fragments of notes: nos. 2, 6, 10, 36, 40, 50-3, 56, 60, 62, 63, 68, 69, 84, 95, 99, 100.
Makasarese letters or fragments of letters: nos. 4, 12, 13,55, 57, 58.
Makasarese notes or fragments of notes: nos. 8, 41, 103 (fragment of a diary for April-May(?) 1733 in the so-called Old Makasarese script).
