Account of a journey to China and Japan by Dr Herbert Watney, with his daughters May Evelyn Watney (M.E.W.) and Winifred Eva Watney (W.E.W.). Part I. England to Shanghai, 6 October to 9 December 1913 (folios 1-27). – Part II. Journey from Shanghai to Paoning and Chien-chou and back to Shanghai, 10 December 1913 to 29 March 1914 (folios 28-89). – Part III. Journey from Shanghai to Japan & Pekin [and] home by the Siberian Railway, 30 March to 29 May 1914 (folios 90-113). Heading on page 1: 'This journey was made by M.E.W., W.E.W., and H.W. to see something of the countries and Mission work in the province of Szechuan (West China) and in Japan'.
The account is a stencil duplicated typescript, with some diagrammatic sketches; headings and dates are in red. Leaves printed on recto only, and numbered 1-113, with 3 blank part titles. Bound in contemporary cloth with gilt lettering on the front board: ‘Diary of journey in China’. There are pencil annotations on paste-downs, probably by a dealer (biographical notes at front of volume, dealer’s code at end).
