- Title:
- Journal of a continental tour, 1815-1816
- Scope & Content:
-
Journal of an unidentified Englishman touring the Low Countries, Germany and Italy, with notes on sights, artworks, theatres, opera houses and landscapes, lists of prices and distances, and inns used. The tour started from London and extended to Naples, via Bruges, Brussels, Antwerp, Cologne, Coblenz, Mainz, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Ludwigsburg, Stuttgart, Ulm, Augsburg, Munich, Innsbruck, Brenner, Lake Garda, Verona, Vicenza, Padua, Venice, Ferrara, Bologna, Florence, Siena, Rome, Naples and Pompeii, returning via Rome, Florence, Covigliajo, Bologna, Milan. The full journal ceases after 24 January, and a summary itinerary for 25 Jan – 21 Feb 1816 follows (Milan - Geneva - Paris - Dover – Clapham). Following pages consist of distance and expense tables, and sums received from various bankers during the tour. At the end of the volume (reversed) are:
- Carriage cost calculations
- ‘Mem of inns’ (town, inns stayed, comment – e.g. ‘dear’, ‘very bad’)
- Distances between towns, expenses at Rome, Naples, Florence and other cities, continued at front of book
- Lists of artists from the Flemish, Dutch, German, Venetian, Bolognese or Lombard, Florentine, Roman and Neapolitan schools, with birthplace and dates.
Pasted in are four pressed plant specimens, the first pair unidentified, and the second pair labelled as gathered from the Fountain of Egeria and from the entrance to the Sybil’s Grotto.
The journal is written in a stationery notebook (stationer’s label on front paste-down: William Winbolt, stationer, St Pauls Church Yard) bound in full sheep leather, recently re-backed, with marbled endpapers.
