Divan-i Usuli - ديوان اسولى
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains the following four texts :
ff 1r-8v : Sixty-nine sayings of Muhammad صلعم, with a metrical Turkish paraphrase, without the author''s name. The paraphrase consists of two beyts for each saying. At the end are ten sayings of Ali, with a similar Turkish paraphrase, under the heading Tercüme-yi kelimat-i Hazret-i Ali kerem Allah ;
ff 8v-67r : Divan-i Usuli, a collection of the poetical works of Usuli under the heading Der münacat-i Mevlani Usuli. Usuli was a native of Yeniçe-yi Vardar, Rumelia (today Giannitsa, Central Macedonia, Greece). Attracted by the fame of the great mystic İbrahim Gülşeni, he went to Egypt and became a fervent disciple of the Şeyh. After the death of Gülşeni in 940 AH (1533-34 CE), he returned to Yeniçe-yi Vardar and spent the rest of his life in religious seclusion and poverty. His poetry is entirely mystic and in the manner of Nesimi. Several sources indicate that Usuli died in 945 AH (1538-39 CE). The contents of the Divan include: a mesnevi entitled Münacat, as well as other mesneviler and a short prose piece (ff 8v-14v); a mesnevi in praise of some holy people in Yeniçe-yi Vardar under the heading Şehrengiz Mevlana Usulî Küdüs Sire (ff 14v-20v); seven kasideler (ff 20v-27r); muhammeler and tercibendler (ff 27r-31v); gazeller in alphabetical order (ff 31v-67r), the first of which is quoted by Latifi and Ali as the most popular of Usulî''s poems;
ff 67v-68r : A tercibend with the heading Kasid-i Sultan Mustafa. Sultan Mustafa, who was put to death in 960 AH (1552-53 CE) by his father Süleyman, is recorded by Ahdi and Kınalızade as being among the princely poets;
ff 68v-75r : Religious poems by Garbi under the heading İlahiyat-i Fakıru''l-hal Garibi. These consist of nine gazeller and a moral poem in mesnevi style with the heading Pendname-yi Fakıru''l-hal Garibi. Garibi, similar to Usuli, was a native of Yeniçe-yi Vardar. He became a Mevlevi, led a wandering life, and died in Istanbul in 954 AH (1547-48 CE).
The manuscript was copied in Rebiülevvel 973 AH (September-October 1565 CE).
