Drawings in pencil, and pencil and wash, of two of Sydney Parkinson's sketchbooks kept during James Cook's first voyage of the Endeavour, (1768-1771), mainly comprised of coastal views and landscapes, and including depictions of birds, dolphins, and boats, and also folios of memo inscriptions.
- Scope & Content:
-
Rebound material of Sydney Parkinson's sketchbooks kept during the first voyage of the South Seas, on the Endeavour, which accounts the voyage from Plymouth to Madeira, Rio de Janiero, Terra del Fuego, to the Society Islands, Australia and New Zealand. Includes sixty-nine folios of drawings mostly in pencil, and also pencil and wash, and five folios of memoranda inscriptions in Parkinson's hand.
Drawings mostly depict coastal views of aspects and settlements at bays and islands, and identified mountain peaks, with also drawings and studies of boats, birds, dolphins, trees, and tattooing. Many panoramic coastal views are drawn across two folios, and often formatted in split views on the same folio. Parkinson has made use of the recto and verso of the former sketchbook folios and the content has been catalogued and described between folio sides and ranges according to what is more readily coherent.
Note on the previous fly-leaf in the hand of Sir Frederic Madden, former keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum, 1828-37: 'Lt Cook's first Voyage in the Endeavor was in 1768-1771. These sketches are by A. Buchan draughtsman to Mr Banks.' Joppien and Smith refute this claim as impossible considering many examples of the subjects drawn and accounted are subsequent to Buchan's death. They identify all drawings, and their title inscriptions and memoranda are all in the hand of Parkinson.
Folios 1 to 11, subjects of the Society Islands only.
Folio 12, a tattoo study at New Zealand.
Folio 13, notes on the appearance and colour of water within reefs, etc.
Folios 14 and 15, drawings of birds.
Folios 16 to 22, include views at Australia, New Zealand, Java.
Folio 23, figures at Madeira.
Folios 23 verso to 36 recto, sequence of drawings executed in Rio de Janeiro.
Folios 36 verso to 67 include drawings made between Tierra del Fuego and Jakarta, with the exception folio 41 being a view at Raiatea, possibly due to Parkinson retrospectively finding space for later drawings in his sketchbooks.
Folios 61 verso to 62, views at East Australian suspected drawn from Herman Diedrich Spöring's original.
Folios 68 to 69, drawings of boats.
Folios 70 to 75, inscriptions, including a daily log kept by Parkinson of the voyage from 20th Sept 1768 to 20 April 1770.
Folios 3, 7, 8, 10, 15 verso, 16 verso, 21, 22, 49 verso, 57 recto, 63 verso-64 recto, 65 verso-66 recto, are drawings of boats, including 15 and 16 depicting the Endeavour, and 22, the Endeavour's boats.

Folios 1 to 11 are from the smaller original sketchbookFolios 23 to 69 suspected to be in the original order of the larger original sketchbook.Folios 13 to 22 and possibly 70 were previously loose folios from the larger original sketchbook.
