Woodblock-printed Japanese edition of the 'The Sutra of Filial Piety', an apocryphal Buddhist text composed in China during the Tang Dynasty. Undated but an accompanying document attributes it to the Muromachi Period (1333-1573): 仏説父母恩重経 室町 / 朝鮮版摸刻.
On verso a handwritten version of the Chinese 'Xiao jing' '[Japanese: Kōkyō], the Confucian 'Classic of Filial Piety'.

Format: Woodblock-printed scroll. The scroll appears to have been folded in a accordion style (orihon) with panels 10 cm wide and subsequently flattened and backed as a scroll.
Dimensions: 220 x 5400 mm
Illustrations: interspersed between the sections of text are 22 hand-coloured illustrations depicting examples of filial behaviour, Buddhist deities and images of heaven and hell.
Binding: original (?) brocade cover at start of scroll.
Annotations: Printed reading marks with additional handwritten reading marks and notes in red ink.
