Anonymous 195 line poem entitled ‘The Mirror: I reflect but not Magnify’. First line: ‘With thee My Muse, forever cou’d I stray’. 4 folios.
The poem is a satire on vice and vanity in general, and female folly in particular. After a general introductory section, the writer chastises one ‘M…t’ for her immodest choice of reading and for her friends. Though ‘M…t’ herself is chaste, she should exercise prudence and avoid bad company. The remainder of the poem is devoted to a scathing satirical attack on two of her friends, the ‘rustick, masculine, & bold’ ‘M…ll’, and ‘H…ss’, who ‘packets poison out in every Breath’.
It includes a reference to Alexander Pope (‘Wisdom & decency she’s put to fight / And thinks with Pope “Whatever is, is right” page 4).
Accompanying draft transcript made by the manuscript seller, c 2016 (typescript, 5 folios).
