Illustrated manuscript album depicting ceremonial official costumes, furniture and objects of the imperial court under the Manchu dynasty, with descriptions.
The British Library's item is incomplete: the 38 folios in its collection formed part of a larger album, originally together with the leaves now at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Museum of Scotland and the National Museum of Ireland. The original work was arranged in six parts: ceremonial vessels, scientific equipment, caps and robes, music instruments, insignia, and military objects.
The Western binding spine reports in golden letters: Costumes & Furnitures of the Imperial Court. Chinese. Brit. Mus. Oriental 9430.

Materials: black and coloured ink on silk. Blue leather binding.
Dimensions: 400 x 420 mm
Binding: the original concertina format was divided and the folios acquired by the British Museum were subsequently bound in blue leather Western binding. The 38 folios in the Library collection were originally part of a larger work.

- The original complete work may have been kept in the Wenyuan Pavilion Library in the Yuanming Yuan (Summer Palace), Beijing.

Another note in pen on the item reports: Presented by Col. Sir Henry Knollys, K.C.V.O. 14 June 1924.
The green stamp on the manuscript suggests that the item was acquired via donation.

Folio 3 was displayed in the exhibition Oriental Manuscripts. An Exhibition of Oriental Manuscripts in the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts in the British Museum (1973). A label on the item from the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts reports that on the 1st of March 1973 the folio 3 was taken for exhibition, Kings Library.
