- Title:
- Queen Elizabeth I's funeral procession
- Scope & Content:
-
Original pen and ink drawing of Elizabeth I's funeral procession, 1603. It is attributed to William Camden, Clarenceaux herald: although he may not have been the artist, the hand recording the names of the figures resembles his.
It includes the chariot drawn by four horses on which stood Elizabeth's coffin; civic authorities (e.g. officers to the Lord Mayor of London, the Aldermen and Recorder of London, and the Lord Mayor); various members of the royal household (grooms, yeomen, clerks, children and gentlemen of the chapel, sergeants, chaplains, secretaries, Sir Edward Carey, the Master of the Jewel House, and Sir John Fortescue, Chancellor of the Exchequer); heralds; poor women and men; John Whitgift, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and several of Elizabeth's courtiers, such as Sir Walter Ralegh, Sir Robert Cecil, and her principal mourner, the Lady Marchioness of Northampton. Camden is himself depicted among the heralds, bearing a coat decorated with fleur-de-lis and lions passant-guardant. The end of the procession is not visible, as the manuscript has been damaged.
This manuscript and Add MS 35324, ff. 26r–39r, are the first pictorial records of the funeral procession of an English sovereign.
