- Title:
- The original Register of the Minutes of the Privy Council, 10 May 1545-13 June 1547
- Scope & Content:
-
The original copy of the Register of the Minutes of the Privy Council, from 10 May 1545 to 13 June 1547. The entries from 10 May 1545-26 Jan 1547 (ff. 3r-320r) cover the end of Henry VIII's reign, and partially cover a period missing from the sequence of Privy Council Registers in the National Archives (PC 2). The early months of the reign of Edward VI, 6 Feb-13 Jun 1547 (ff. 321r-361r), overlap with the copy in The National Archives, PC 2/2, covering the period 31 Jan 1547-4 Oct 1549. This copy may be more the original working copy.
There is a further crucial distinction between the two volumes. For the reign of Henry VIII, Add MS 5476 is unambiguously a register of Privy Council meetings, headed by the Councillors (or some of them) present. Under Edward VI these disappear, and the volume becomes more unambiguously a record of responses to in-letters and of out-letters. The last dated meeting is 13 Jun 1547, but this is followed by the latter warrant, dated 4 Jun 1547 (see the discussion in Dale E. Hoak, The King's Council in the Reign of Edward VI [Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1976], pp. 24-26).
There are intriguing symbols and hieroglyphs in the margin at ff. 34v, 72v, 177v, 219r-220v, 230v, 236v, 237v, 252v, 254v, 272v, 297v-298r, 312r, 332r (probably merchants' marks relating to the orders they are beside).
The Privy Council registers have been calendared in Acts of the Privy Council of England Volume 1, 1542-1547, and Volume 2, 1547-1550, ed. John Roche Dasent (London, 1890), both accessible on British History Online http://www.british-history.ac.uk/acts-privy-council [accessed 4 December 2019]. The Edwardian correspondence in Add MS 5476 is pp. 437-509 of the latter volume.
