- Title:
- Various collections relating to Norfolk
- Scope & Content:
-
A volume composed of various collections relative to the county of Norfolk, chiefly in the handwriting of Mr. Borrett of Griston, viz.
1. Notes of Norfolk families, alphabet of arms, etc., collected by Mr. Borrett and Rev. Joseph Bokenham. f. 1.
2. ‘Index Villaris Norfolciensis, or an exact Register, alphabetically digested, of all the market towns, parishes, villages, etc. in the County of Norfolk, Norwich. Printed by Henry Crossgrove 1715.’ This title is prefixed, but Tom Martin has added a query, whether the work was ever really printed. The title is not very accurate, for the work in reality contains table of the livings in Norfolk, with the names of the patrons, and rates in the King’s books. f. 44.
3. Alphabet of arms, by Borrett. f. 76.
4. Pedigrees transcribed from Thoroton’s [Robert Thoroton] Nottinghamshire, by Barrett. f. 81.
5. Arms of nobility and gentry, in the Netherlands, Spain, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, and Italy, collected by Borrett. f. 114.
6. Collection of arms, monuments, etc., in the county of Norfolk, transcribed by Mr. Borrett, out of an old manuscript lent him by Mr. Isbourne of Norwich, and out of Mr Cornwall’s book, etc. f. 159. Prefixed is an index of places, in the handwriting of Tom Martin.
7. Arms of various families; quarterings of Gawdy, and of Knollis [Knollys]; extracts from the register of Snetterton Church; inscriptions and arms at West Harling, and in Mr. Gawdy’s house, relative to the family of Bardwell; all in the handwriting of Borrett. f. 169.
8. Norfolk Feodary Book, or Book of Tenures of such lands as are held in capite by knights’ service, temp. Henry III (different from the Testa de Neville) translated by Borrett from a copy made by John Cady before 1645. Prefixed is a long note in the hand of Le Neve [John Le Neve]. f. 171.
9. Arms of ‘such of the Gentility as have continued in accompt from before King Edward the third to this time.’ Arranged alphabetically by Mr. Borrett. f. 191.
10. Arms and quarterings of gentry of different countries, in the handwriting of Borrett. f. 216.
11. Transcript of the visitation made in Norfolk by Harvey [William Harvey], alias Clarenceux, ano. 1563. Transcribed by Mr. Borrett from a copy made by James Strangeman, 1591. f. 224.
12. Pedigrees of Jermy, Corbett, Goldingham, Southwell, and Whetnall, in the writing of Blomefield. f. 244.
13. ‘Copia de nominibus Villarum et Dominocum carundem, in Com. Norf. In Custodia Remem. Thesaur. de Seaccaris, 9 Edw. II 1315,’ in the handwriting of Blomefield. f. 248. Folio, ff. 253.
The whole of the contents of this volume formerly belonged to Tom Martin of Palgrave, and were consulted by Blomefield [Francis Blomefield] and Le Neve, as appears by notes made by each. On the first article is fixed the engraved arms of Blomefield, dated 1736.
