The 16th of 19 volumes which comprise the Collections towards a History of Sussex made by the Reverend William Hayley, Rector of Brightling, and form an excellent supplement to Sir William Burrell’s collection for the same county.
A thin volume in quarto (44 folios), in Mr. Hayley’s handwriting, containing:
1. Of the Lords of the Rape of Hastings. (folios 2-14)
2. Of the Lords of the Rape of Pevensey. (folios 15-20)
3. A complete and exact account of the persons who have been seized of the Lordship and Borough of Lewes, in a continued succession from the conquest to the present time [1772], in a letter from Mr. Hayley to Mr. Austen(?). Dated 10 December 1772. (folios 27-30b)
4. Copy of a letter from Mr. Hayley to the Reverend Mr. Austen, respecting the custom of burial in stone coffins. Dated 15 December 1772. (folios 31-32)
5. Copy of a letter from Mr. Hayley to Mr. Austen, concerning a passage in the Chronicle of Thomas Wikes, in describing the battle of Lewes. Dated 2 February 1773. (folios 33, 37b)
6. Further collections relating to the Rape and Honour of Hastings. (folios 34-36)
7. Copies and abstracts of original deeds and instruments in the possession of John Fuller of Rose Hill esquire, relating to the manor of Werd in the parish of Brightling, Sussex, from the reign of Henry VIII to the year 1732. (folios 37-43)
8. Abstract of title deeds relating to the copyhold estates in the county of Sussex, held at the manor of Burwash, 1638-1693. (folios 43, 43b)
9. Copy of a letter from Isaac Malleson to Nathaniel Cole, with an opinion concerning the title of the Sussex estate conveyed to Mr. Brockman (by the above deeds). Dated 25 June 1733. (folio 44)
10. Copy of an original charter in the possession of John Fuller esquire, being a grant of a wood in Lymene, Kent, from William Botsweyn to Sir Thomas de Brokhulle, knight. Dated 11 Edw. III [1337/1338]. (folio 44)
