The 19th of 19 volumes which comprise the Collections towards a History of Sussex made by the Reverend William Hayley, Rector of Brightling, and form an excellent supplement to Sir William Burrell’s collection for the same county.
A thin volume in folio (43 folios), in which are various miscellaneous papers and memoranda, viz.
1. Names of places in the Rape of Chichester. (folio1)
2. Summary of religious houses in Sussex, with their valuations (from Dugdale). (folio 2)
3. Arms of Biddenden Steeple. (folio 3)
4. Short historical notes concerning Hastings and the Priory there. (folio 4)
5. Notes of Arms at Bodiham Castle, with memoranda relating to the families of Boteler and Dalingrugge [Dallingrigge?]. (folios 5-10b)
6. Draft of a letter from Mr. Hayley to Sir William Burrell, containing an abstract of deeds relating to the advowson of Brightling in Sussex. Dated 16 December 1775. (folios 11-12b)
7. Notes relative to the families of Haremere, Echingham, and Hastings. (Folios 13-14b)
8. Note of a grant from Ricardus de Redveriis, Earl of Devon, to the monastery of Christ Church, Twinham, Hampshire. (folio 15b)
9. Printed paper containing an extract of a letter from Mr. Hayley to William Burrell esquire, upon a supposed portrait of Archbishop [Henry] Chicheley in a window of the Church of Battle. Dated 8 April 1776, with an engraving of the portrait annexed. (folios 16-16b) (See Add MS 6359 folio 48)
