These copies are scrupulously made by a contemporary and official hand, no doubt, for the use of the Commissioners, and embrace the interval between February 1566 and August 1568. The Commissioners appointed by King Philip, 5 February 1566, were Jehan de Croy, Comte de Rieulx, Jean de Blasere, Councillor and Master of Requests, and Robert du Cellier, Councillor of the Chamber of Flanders; and a second Commission was issued by the Duke of Alva, 22 November 1567, appointing Robert du Cellier and Pierre Coronel Councillors, and Martin Hutin, Greffier of Tournay, to execute the Office. The correspondence between these persons with the Duchess of Parma, Regent of the Netherlands, and the Duke of Alva, relate entirely to the disturbances raised by persons of the reformed Religion at Tournay, and elsewhere, the apprehension and trials of the prisoners, etc., and are accompanied by copies of letters from other persons, all relating to the same affair, together, with their official instructions.
For information on the rise of these disturbances, see the ‘Histoire des Troubles et Guerres Civiles du Pays-Bas, depuis l’an 1559 jusques à l’an 1581’. Octavo. 1582.
