Works by Joseph ha-Kohen
Contents
A chronicle of the persecutions suffered by the Jews followed by poems by the same author.
Partially autograph (esp. last few pages; see Pilar León Tello, El Valle del Llanto, p. 28).
End of the composition with colophon on f. 55v (upside down).
Two colophons contradict each other: the one of f. 1r says that 'I started to write the book called The Vale of Tears on Marḥeshṿan 1, [5]322', that is October 1561. The colophon at the end of the book on f. 55v however says that the copying of the book was finished on 1 Elul 5320, that is August/September 1560. According to Almbladh, the title page with the first colophon most probably did not belong to this manuscript. T. Kronholm's explanation: 'the date of the title-page... represents the day on which the copyist commenced his work, whilst the date of the colophon [at the end of the work] may be part of the author's personal signature to the confirmation of the copy and in conformity with the conclusion of an earlier revision...' (see, Kronholm, p. 162.).
