Papers of Emma Ewart Larkins (d 1857), wife of Major George Larkins (1807-1857), Bengal Artillery.
The box comprises correspondence written by Emma Larkins, primarily to her three eldest daughters Constance Marion, Alice Shaffalitsky and Ellen Mona, all living in England. Included in the correspondence is the letter by Emma Larkins, written on 9 June 1857, which was smuggled out of Cawnpore during the seige there. It was the last letter Emma Larkins wrote before she, her husband and their three youngest children Augusta, Jessie and George were all killed in Cawnpore in June 1857, and describes the desperate situation faced by all those in Cawnpore, along with goodbye messages to each of her children in England.
