Signatures in Samaritan characters; f. 11-20 is numbered as quire 83!.

Catchwords on most verso sides, running oblique to the text.

Collation is detached from spine,; f. 1 is entirely detached from collation.

Hand(s)

Samaritan minuscule script and Arabic script of the 18th century; in black and red inks. Scribe: Ab Sakhwa/Murjan ben Ibrahim, Danfi family.

F. 5v: trace of a crude, correcting hand, perhaps that of the purchaser, Joseph ben Israel.

Binding

Islamic flap binding, blind-tooled and blind-blocked, with embossed side panels. Boxed.

History

Origin: 1736 West Bank (Nablus)

Provenance and Acquisition

Deed of sale on f. 80v indicating that Joseph ben Israel bought the manuscrpit in 1175 AH (1761 CE).

Moses Gaster (b. 1856, d. 1939), scholar and rabbi: his manuscript, Cod. G. 1189; purchased by the British Museum from him on 12 April, 1924; date of accession 15 December 1931.
