- Roll of New Year's Gifts given and received by Queen Elizabeth I at Greenwich, 1 Jan 1588
- Scope & Content:
-
Roll of New Year's Gifts given and received by Queen Elizabeth I at Greenwich, 1 Jan 30 Elizabeth I (1588).
The recto contains a list of donors, grouped in order of precedence, with a description of the gifts made by each and a note as to their disposal. The gifts include a lavish (and lavishly described) necklace from Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord Chancellor.
On the verso is a corresponding list of recipients of gifts, which were all of plate, with a note of the weight, type of object, distributed to each and the name of its maker, the total being given as 4714 ounces three-quarters. Sir Christopher Hatton heads the list, receiving 400 ounces three-quarters. There follows a list of gifts given at sundry times, largely diplomatic but also including wedding and baptismal gifts and a golden bowl to Sir Christopher Hatton, 4 Jan 1588.
The roll is signed in two places by the Queen and in one by John Astley, Master and Treasurer of the Queen's Jewels, with four clerks (Nicholas Bristow junior, Clerk of the Jewels, and Stephen Fulwell, John and Nicholas Pigeon, Grooms and Yeomen of the Jewels and Plate).
Similar rolls for the years 4, 9, 18, 26 and 31 Elizabeth I (1562, 1567, 1576, 1584 and 1589) are now Harley Roll V 18, Add MSS.9772, 4827, Egerton MS 3052 and Lansdowne Roll 17 respectively.
