A typescript copy of the unpublished personal journal of V E W Stewart, PWD (Burma), Royal Indian Engineers (Burma, WWII); Engineer with the Burmah Oil Company 1948-1963; Consultant to the British Ministry of Power 1963-1973. The journal, typed from his rough original, details his life and career, and was written by him while he was living in Guildford, Surrey in 1978/79.
The journal (265 pages) is in three parts:
Part I covers his childhood in Jamaica, his arrival in Burma in 1937, and the outbreak of the Second World War.
Part II comprises the main portion of the journal, and covers events in Burma from 1941 to 1947. It includes an account of his experiences when he was forced to flee to India as a refugee; and an account of the efforts made by the British Government to rehabilitate Burma after the defeat of the Japanese forces in 1945.
Part III covers his employment as an engineer with the Burmah Oil Company in Pakistan and India between 1948 and 1963, and his work as a consultant in England with the Ministry of Power. Page 186 gives an account of the family’s voyage on the Empire Windrush from Jamaica to England in 1948.
The journal contains the following maps:
- Stewart’s evacuation escape route, Burma 1942 (before page 44).
- Burma evacuation, the Hukawng Valley route, 1942 (before page 44).
- Japanese invasion routes, Burma 1942 (before page 44).
- Oil and gas fields of Pakistan (before page 189).
Also included with the journal are the following additional papers. These were not part of the journal, but are included for information and illustration.
- A timeline of the life of Vincent Ernest William Stewart, MBE (1913-2010).
- Copy of a photograph of V E W Stewart, Burma, c1937.
- Photocopy of an image of Stewart’s jeep illuminating the interior of the Anglican Cathedral in Rangoon during the ceremony of purification, 1945. This event is described on page 149 of the journal.
- Copy of a photograph of V E W Stewart and family, Jamaica, 1948.
