An archive, consisting of both paper-based material and electronic records, covering the first 50 years of the experimental theatre company's existence. Almost two-thirds of the paper-based material is comprised of show files, which contain, among other things, design and planning documentation, photographic material, press-clippings, and promotional items; very little material relating to the shows produced in the late 1960s and the early 1970s are present, but later shows are far better represented. There are also dedicated files for photographic, press, and promotional material, which overlap, somewhat, with the show files. The remainder of the paper-based records revolve around the administration, finances, and governance of the company, which are largely incomplete; along with papers from or relating to various cast/crew members of the company, including actor and artist, Jeff Nuttall.

The vast majority of items were held by People Show, at their various offices, until deposited with the British Library.
Items from Mike Figgis, found in the Performers series, were originally held by himself and then sent to People Show at a later date, and eventually arrived at the British Library with the rest of the archive.
It is unclear whether the material held in the Chahine Yavroyan archive were held at the People Show's premises or elsewhere, but that material was collected from their office with the rest of the archive before being transferred to the British Library.

Weeding of duplicate material has taken place, with large amounts of photographs and promotional items removed. Photocopies of original items found in the collection have also been removed, where possible, when the originals have also been present.
Items from the Chahine Yavroyan's show material archive that duplicate the "official" archive have been removed, unless they are originals, in which case they have been retained. Most of the duplicates were photocopies of originals found in the "official" show material files.
Items not relating to the company have been removed, such as copies of Tyrone Huggins' The Eclipse Theatre Story and Tony Jackson's Shots. Whilst both individuals were involved with People Show, the books themselves do not relate to their activities with the company. Tyrone Huggins' book has been retained by the British Library for its holdings as a separate accession.

The majority of items, specifically those present in the Show Material series, were stored in box-files and lever-arch folders, and the integrity of those original arrangements have been maintained where possible, though the contents of some of these box-files and folders have been separated into several files due to the amount of material present and for ease of use.
Other material appears to have been removed from desks and placed into large boxes, including some papers relating to administration, finance, governance and other series; in these instances an arrangement has been imposed upon them, in order to facilitate access.

The majority of the material in the archive has been produced or collected over time as part of the company's performance activities, such as professional photographers taking shots at their shows and photographs for promotional purposes. Other items have been produced as part of administrative, financial, governance, and legal activities; such as the legal papers for the formation of several commercial companies established by People Show: Mullein Productions Limited and People Show Properties Limited.
