Sharḥ al-asbāb wa-al-ʿalāmāt
Nafīs ibn ʿIwaḍ
- Scope & Content:
-
A copy, incomplete at the beginning, of a commentary by Nafīs ibn ʿIwaḍ al-Kirmānī (نفيس بن عوض الكرماني; d. approximately 1449) on Causes and Indications (الأسباب والعلامات; see Or. 5687), a medical reference work on the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of diseases compiled by Najīb al-Dīn Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad ibn ‘Alī ibn ‘Umar al-Samarqandī (نجيب الدين أبو حامد محمد بن علي بن عمر السمرقندي, d. 1222).
Al-Kirmānī completed this commentary in 827/1424 and dedicated it to his Timurid patron Ulugh Beg (ألغ بيك, d. 1449), governor of Samarqand from 812-853/1409-1449 (see f. 346r, lines 20-22, transcribed below).
The present copy was completed in late Shawwāl 981/January-February 1574, by the scribe Aḥmad ibn Badr al-Dīn al-Ḥijāzī (أحمد بن بدر الدين الحجازي; see colophon, f. 346r, lines 18-19, transcribed below).
Begins (f. 1r, lines 1-3):
Ends (f. 346r, lines 20-22):
Colophon (f. 346r, lines 18-19):
