Papers, correspondence and documentation of the climate scientist Sir John Theodore Houghton (born 1931), accumulated in the course of his work as (inter alia) Professor of Atmospheric Physics at the University of Oxford (1976–1983), Director General of the Meteorological Office (1983–1991) and Chairman or co-Chairman of Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1988 to 2002.
The papers represent Houghton's personal record of his life's work. Susan Whitehouse, assistant to John Houghton, was involved in the ordering and preparation of the archive before acquisition by the British Library.
A grant from the Center for History of Physics, American Institute of Physics supported the cataloguing of series 4 of this collection. Cataloguing of the other series will follow in due course.
