Add MS 24413

A collection of works mostly by Dastur Edalji Darabji Sanjana (d. 1847) of Bombay who was the chief priest of the Shahanshahi Parsis, composed for Sir John Malcolm (1769-1833) of the Madras Army who from 1827 to 1831 was Governor of Bombay. Mostly copied by the author whose full name is given here (f. 31) as Mubad ʻAydal ibn Mubad Dārāb ibn Mubad Rustam Sanjānah.

Copy includes Malcolm’s annotations.

Contents:

• (1) Qiṣṣah-ʼi Sanjān (قصهٔ سنجان), the traditional story of the settlement of the Parsis in India composed by Bahman ibn Kayqubād ibn Hurmuzyār Sanjānī at Nausari in AD 1600 (ff. 1v-18v); 

• (2) Fragment of a vocabulary of Avestan and Pazand words explained in Persian. These correspond to the initial portion of the fourth section of the appendix to the Farhang-i Jahangīrī. Incomplete at end (ff. 22r-25v);

• (3) Farhang-i Shāhnāmah (فرهنگ شاهنامه), a glossary of Persian, Pahlavi and Pazand words occurring in Firdawsi''s Shāhnāmah compiled from various dictionaries for Major Malcolm in 1179 yazdagirdi (1809) in Bombay by Dastur Edalji Darabji Sanjana (ff. 31v-45v); 

• (4) Risālah-ʼi Nūshīrvān (رسالهٔ نوشیروان) composed by Dastur Edalji Darabji Sanjana in 1179 yazdagirdi (1809) at the request of Mr Major Malcolm Sahib. Completed in Bombay on 12 Zi’l-Hijjah 1225 hijri, corresponding to 15th Khurdad 1179 yazdagirdi and 20 December 1809 (f. 49v-57r); 

• (5) Hikāyat-i raftan-i Hārūn al-Rashīd barāyi ziyārāt-i dakhma-ʼi Nūshīrvān (حکایت رفتن هارون الرشید برای زیارات دخمهٔ نوشیروان دادگر), the visit of Harun al-Rashid to the tomb of Anushirvan the just (ff. 61r-68v); 

• (6) Part of a work in Persian verse on the assembly held by Anushirvan, his questions to Yunan, and Yunan’s replies. Commissioned by John Malcolm. Completed in Bombay on 12 Zi ‘l-Qaʻdah 1225 hijri corresponding to 15 Khurdad 1179 yazdagirdi and 20 December 1809 (ff. 69v-74v); 

• (7) A work on the Zoroastrian day and month names and on the festivals of Noruz, Mihragan and Tirgan, compiled for Major Malcolm from Pahlavi and Pazand sources by Dastur Edalji Darabji Sanjana (ff. 77v-84r);

• (8) A history of Ardashir Babagan in Pahlavi (ff. 85v-94r).
