The original content was edited by Zhu Mouwei 朱謀㙔 (1552-1624) in the Ming Dynasty which lists out ancient Chinese characters in different fonts. The manuscript was transcribed by Xie Zhaoshen 謝兆申 in 1611 （萬歷三十九年） and separated into 3 sections: Sky, Earth, People with 4 volumes. The fourth volume is believed to be unfinished since there is no 卷终 (end of the volume) at the end.
The content of each character includes the original font, the name of the font, the classification of the character (六書分類法) and an explanation of the character.
There is a handwritten note on the first folio: 'Shanghai, March 1866. M.S.'
Another hand-written note is at the back of the last page: 'Purchase of Mrs A. A. Goodwin. 9 November 1881.'
