Scope & Content:

Sketchbooks and journals by Elizabeth Ellen Buxton (later Barclay) (1848-1919) paternal granddaughter of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton (1786-1845), politician and abolitionist. Her mother, Rachel Jane Buxton (1823-1905), and paternal grandmother, Lady Hannah Buxton (1783-1872), both also being of the noted Quaker family the 'Gurney’s of Earlham'. She was also the cousin of Sydney Charles Buxton, Viscount, afterwards Earl, Buxton (1853 -1934). The collection consists of 15 sketchbooks, loose sketches, and an MS journal, documenting the Buxton family’s domestic life at home in Leytonstone, London; periods spent visiting their grandmother Hannah Buxton at the Gurney family's Norfolk estate Northrepps Hall; and their travels in England and Europe between 1859–1867, including Switzerland. Ellen Buxton was the second eldest of 12 children, and would have been between 11 and 18 years old when creating this material.The material has been arranged by Buxton's paternal granddaughter, Ellen Rhoda Christian Creighton, and her annotations can be identified throughout the material. Sketchbook numbering issued by Creighton has been maintained in the catalogue.

On her death in 1919 Elizabeth Ellen Buxton's diaries and sketchbooks were passed down to her granddaughter Ellen Rhoda Christian Creighton, and her great nephew John Barclay.
