Ardā vīrāf nāmah اردا ویراف نامه
by Zartusht Bahrām
- Scope & Content:
-
The Ardā vīrāf nāmah (اردا ویراف نامه), a poetical version in Persian by Zartusht Bahrām ibn Pazhdū of the book of Ardā Vīrāf, based on a Pahlavi original of the 9th/10th century describing Arda Viraf's journey through heaven and hell and his return home afterwards.
Copied by the Rev. John Haddon Hindley(1765-1827) from a manuscript whose colophon (f. 64r) is dated 22 Shavval 1203 AH (1789) made by Peshotan Jīv, son of Hīrjī ibn Homjī ibn Bahrāmjī ibn Bhāʼījī ibn Shākir ibn Bahrām Chandā called Patvārī of Nawsari. This would appear to be a copy belonging to Samuel Guise (John Rylands Persian 41) which Hindley had himself purchased at sale in 1812.
The text has been copied on the right hand side of the page only with the left remaining blank – except for f. 3 which contains a partial English translation.
Contents:
- ff. 1r-2r: a description of the Ardā Vīrāf nāmah by Hindley;
- f. 2v: a second description copied from Samuel Guise’s note in the original manuscript;
- f. 3r-3v: 19 verses relating to the conquest of Alexander and its consequent destruction of Zoroastrianism;
- ff. 3v-64v: The usual text of the Ardā vīrāf nāmah.
