- Title:
- 大運河全圖 Da yun he quan tu [Map of the Yellow river and the Grand Canal]
- Scope & Content:
-
This hand-drawn map represents the courses of the Yellow River and the Grand Canal from the capital to Haining Xian.
The map starts with the depiction of rivers including Tonghua He (Chi: 通惠河) and Lu He (Chi: 潞河) near the capital (Chi: 京師). The capital is depicted in the heaven among clouds. The map stops with a red sun near Haining Xian (Chi: 海寧縣).
The Yellow River starts near Meng Xian (Chi: 孟縣) and Luo He (Chi: 洛河) and goes into the sea near Yancheng Xian (Chi: 鹽城縣).
Along with the Great Canal, the map also shows the surrounding castle towns, mountains, lakes, temples, dams, and wharves.
The map also reports: descriptions of constructions or dredge works ordered by the Emperor and the environmental conditions of the river.
The silk map was mounted on paper and accompanied by two yellow panels at the beginning and the end of the scroll. The paper was then mounted with silk a cover on the second layer. A wooden roller at the end provides the support to the scroll and a wooden stave supports the beginning. The scroll is wrapped in a silk bag with a green ribbon on the top.
