- Title:
- Manuscript miscellany, including movements for keyboard by Maurice Greene
- Scope & Content:
-
Manuscript miscellany including two pieces by Maurice Greene copied in the first part of the 18th century, but with later additions up until at least 1875. Some pages have evidently been removed as stubs remain (17 between i and folio 1; 1 between folios 2 and 3; 4 between folios 3 and 4).
The book contains many pages of blank staves and some sketches and incomplete works. All entries other than the Maurice Greene pieces appear to be in a 19th-century hand. Identifiable pieces include:
- ff. 1-2r. 'Farewell', for piano. Date of 1868 given at the top of the score.
- f. 2v. Setting of Psalm 60, in short score. Incomplete.
- f. 6. Untitled piece for keyboard in Eb major. Date of 1875 given at the top of the score.
- ff.7-26r. 'Choral Song', by Samuel Sebastian Wesley, 'arranged for 4 hands by KP 7/75'. The original title of the work is also noted as 'Three Pieces for a Chamber Organ!'. The three pieces are presented in a different order than their published form: ff.7-14r. 'No. 3', dated at the end '24/7/75'; ff.14v-19r. 'No. 1', dated at the end '28/7/75'; ff.19r-26r. 'No. 2'. The copyist has noted in the middle of the last piece (f. 23r): 'These last 4 bars of this part in the original are in F. I hope to goodness SSW may never see my alteration altho' I am sure it ought to be in C.'
- ff. 27-30v. 'Motett for 8:voc:'. A setting of Psalm 103, the text of which appears on the facing page (f. 26v).
- ff. 32-38. 'Set of Lessons by Mr Green in F.', copied in an early 18th-century hand. Includes the following movements: [Prelude] (f.32v); 'Almand' (ff. 33-34r); 'Corant' (ff. 34v-35r); 'Gavott' (ff. 35v-36r); [Gigue] (ff. 36v-37r); 'Siciliana' (ff. 37v-38). The same suite appears in a manuscript volume in the Gerald Coke Handel Collection (Miscellany C 10), and five of the movements also appear in Add MS 31467.
- ff. 38v-40r. 'Set of Lessons in Fb [i.e. F minor] by Dr Green', copied in an early 18th-century hand. Comprises two movements: [Almand] (ff. 38v-39r); 'Courant' (ff. 39v-40r). These movements are part of a suite copied by John Alcock, now at the Royal College of Music (MS 1057).
- ff. 43r-41v. 'Johnnie's March on 5 notes, for 5 little fingers', for piano duet.
