Qur’ān, in Arabic, with some notes in Persian on flyleaf.
The folio (f. 441) containing the last two chapters of the Qur'an (S. al-Falaq and S. al-Nas) is a later replacement for the lost original.
From Malakand, North-West Frontier province (present-day Pakistan), 19th c.
In between the folios are some fragments from lithographed books and manuscripts, and a few plant fronds.
A pencil note on f. 1v by Lt. Col. Arundel Begbie (1865-1954) states that ‘This copy of the Koran was found in the village of the “Mad Fakir” or “Mad Mullah” during the Indian Frontier War of 1897-98’; the same information is repeated in another pencil note at the end of the volume, on f. 443v. This probably identifies the location of acquisition as Malakand, in present-day North-West Frontier province of Pakistan. The “Mad Fakir” was the Pashtun tribal leader Sartor Faqir, Mullah Mastan, but there is no evidence to link this MS directly with him.
