Joseph Brearley was a teacher of English and German, and subsequently Deputy Head, at Hackney Downs School, London (1939-42 and 1946-71). He produced a number of school plays, including Macbeth (1947) and Romeo and Juliet (1948) in which Harold Pinter took leading roles. Upon Brearley's retirement, in 1971, he moved to Germany, where he continued to teach. There he met the artist and teacher Mara Loytved-Hardegg, with whom he shared the last years of his life. He died 19 November 1977.
Much of the material in the collection, particularly journals and extensive correspondence, was produced during Brearley's final years in Germany, but there is a file of material relating to drama productions at Hackney Downs School which includes detailed stage production notes and diagrams for the two plays by Shakespeare in which Pinter performed. Pinter is also a correspondent with both Brearley and Loytved-Hardegg.
