The papers consist of:
- Two letters (ff.1-2) from McClean to his father written from Bombay and London (4 Jan 1901 and undated).
- Letters (ff.3-29) from McClean to his mother: five letters written while aboard the SS Himalaya on a voyage to Australia, via Port Said, Aden, Colombo, Freemantle and Melbourne, and one letter written from Sydney. Also, a letter written from Tahiti describing his visit to Flint Island to observe the solar eclipse of 3rd January 1908 (1 manuscript and 3 typescript copies).
- Seventeen letters (ff.30-48) from McClean to his brother Bill [William Newsome McClean]. Most of the letters are written from India (Mahableshwar, Mandhi, Dhupdal, Belgaum, Poona, Satara, Bombay and Benares) while he was working in the Public Works Department), but also from Paris, Auckland and London. The letters are mostly concerned with news of family and friends, and his working life in India.

- Typescript extract (ff.50-53) from a letter to Professor Turner on the subject of coconut hooking, eel jumping, turtle turning, crabs, and native dress (undated, 4 copies).
