King Æthelstan of England grants one hide at Monkton to the minster of Sts Mary and Peter, Exeter; dated 670 (for 924 x 939); Latin with Old English bounds; spurious (Sawyer, no. 387).
Endorsed in hands contemporary with the charter, 'Munecatunes boc' and 'to Muneca tune'; in a 13th-century hand, ‘Regis Ædelstani de Munecatun’; and in hands of the 16th century, 'Carta Adelstani Regis super manso quod olim vocabatur Moneketone . modo tamen Exchestre pro fundacione Ecclesia', 'Carta Adthelstani Regis concessa Beato Petro de manso quod antiquitus vocabatur Moneketone ad monasterium quod nunc nuncupatur Exechestre ad fundandum monasterium 7 divise mansi sunt hee.primo de scokebroc forde . sursum per rivum etc . ut infra patet' and 'Devon'.
The same scribe was also responsible for three other charters, most likely produced at Exeter: Exeter 2517, Exeter 2520, and William Salt Library, Stafford. MS 7 (Stokes, English Vernacular Minuscule (2014), p. 155, n. 143).
